The Mets faced the Phillies on a Thursday afternoon in Philadelphia. The teams played the finale of a three-game series at Citizens Bank Park. The Mets completed a sweep of the series and recorded their eighth straight win with a 5-4 victory over the Phils.
Jose Reyes singled to lead off the top of the first inning. An ensuing double by Endy Chavez scored Reyes with the first run of the game. With one out, Phillies’ starter Cory Lidle walked Carlos Delgado and Chavez stole third base. David Wright hit a three-run homer to extend the Mets’ lead to 4-0. Lidle struck out Chris Woodward and Eli Marrero to end the inning. Mets’ starter Steve Trachsel then pitched a perfect bottom half.
Lidle retired the Mets in order in the top of the second. Pat Burrell hit a home run to begin the bottom of the inning. Ryan Howard singled and scored the Phillies’ second run on a two-out double by Sal Fasano. Lidle hit a single to advance Fasano to third base. Trachsel retired Jimmie Rollins on a fly ball to center fielder Carlos Beltran for the third out. Lidle held the Mets to a double by Beltran in a scoreless top of the third. Trachsel then shut down Philadelphia despite walks to Bobby Abreu and Howard in the bottom half of the inning.
After a scoreless fourth, Reyes began the top of the fifth inning with a double to right field. Chavez’s sacrifice bunt moved Jose to second. Beltran hit a sacrifice fly to score Reyes and increase the Mets’ lead to 5-2. Delgado grounded out to first baseman Howard to end the inning. Abreu singled with two outs in the bottom half. Burrell followed with his second homer of the game for two more Phillies runs. Trachsel then retired Howard on an inning-ending fly ball to left fielder Marrero.
Lidle and Trachsel each pitched a perfect sixth inning. Ramon Castro hit a single to open the top of the seventh. Philadelphia reliever Rheal Cormier set down the next three batters to close out the inning. Mets’ reliever Aaron Heilman retired the Phils 1-2-3 in the bottom half. The Mets were shut down by the Phillies’ Arthur Rhodes in the top of the eighth. Duaner Sanchez then set down all three Phils hitters in the bottom of the inning.
Pinch-hitter Julio Franco singled off Philadelphia reliever Geoff Geary with one out in the top of the ninth. Reyes lined out to center fielder Aaron Rowand. Franco stole second base and Chavez drew a walk. A passed ball by catcher Fasano moved the runners to second and third. Geary then fanned Beltran for the final out of the inning.
To start the bottom of the ninth, Mets’ reliever Billy Wagner got Rowand on a fly ball to right fielder Chavez. Abraham Nunez popped out to first baseman Delgado. Wagner then struck out Fasano to end the game. The Mets had a series sweep and a winning streak of eight games.
