The Mets and Yankees played on a Saturday afternoon in the Bronx. The Mets got hits in eight of the nine innings for a total of 16 for the game. The Mets came out with a 6-2 win.

After a scoreless first inning, Fernando Tatis drew a one-out walk from Yankee starter Andy Pettitte. Tatis moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt before Omir Santos clouted a two-run homer to give the Mets a lead. The Yanks got a run in the bottom half on Alex Rodriguez's home run off Mets' starter Fernando Nieve.

The Mets got three singles in the third and fourth innings, but did not add to their lead. In the fifth, Carlos Beltran led off with a single and David Wright followed with a double. Gary Sheffield hit a single to score Beltran with the Mets' third run and Wright came home on Tatis's force play grounder. Santos then hit the Mets' second double of the inning to score Tatis from first base and increase the lead to 5-1.

Sheffield's home run off reliever Alfredo Aceves gave the Mets another run in the top of the seventh inning. The Yanks scored in the bottom half on Derek Jeter's single off Sean Green that brought home Melky Cabrera. Green then retired the Yankees in order in the bottom of the eighth.

Francisco Rodriguez pitched a perfect bottom of the ninth to finish off the game. The Mets had a victory over their cross-city rivals with a potent hitting attack. The win for Nieve was his first one as a Met.
