Following a scoreless first inning, Jeromy Burnitz doubled off Rangers’ starter Colby Lewis to begin the top of the second. An ensuing double by Ty Wigginton scored Burnitz for the first run of the game. Jason Phillips grounded out to shortstop Alex Rodriguez and a home run by Vance Wilson stretched the Mets’ lead to 3-0. Lewis completed the inning with no further scoring. Mets’ starter Al Leiter then pitched a perfect bottom half.

Roberto Alomar and Cliff Floyd started the top of the third inning with back-to-back singles. Burnitz flied out to center fielder Doug Glanville and a single by Wigginton scored Alomar. Texas reliever R. A. Dickey walked Phillips to load the bases. Wilson hit a single to bring home Floyd and Wigginton. Jose Reyes hit into a force play and Roger Cedeno’s single plated Phillips with the Mets’ seventh run. A single by Timo Perez brought home Reyes for an 8-0 Mets lead. Dickey then got Alomar to fly out to Glanville and end the inning.

The Rangers loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the third inning. Leiter retired Mark Teixeira on a line drive to left fielder Perez for the third out. Dickey and Leiter each pitched scoreless ball in the fourth and fifth innings. In the top of the sixth, the Mets were set down in order by Rangers’ reliever Brian Shouse. Leiter limited Texas to a single by Einar Diaz in the bottom half of the inning. Shouse and Mets’ reliever Graeme Lloyd then pitched shutout ball in the seventh and eighth.

In the top of the ninth, Joe McEwing got a leadoff single against Texas reliever Jay Powell. Floyd drew a walk and Burnitz lined out to Glanville in center field. Wigginton hit a double to score McEwing and an infield single by Phillips loaded the bases. Wilson was hit by a pitch to force home Floyd and make the score 10-0. Wigginton scored the Mets’ eleventh run on Reyes’ ground out to second baseman Michael Young. Powell then retired Tsuyoshi Shinjo on a grounder to third baseman Hank Blalock for the final out of the inning.

Blalock singled off Mets’ reliever John Franco to start the bottom of the ninth. Rodriguez flied out to Burnitz in right field and Rafael Palmeiro grounded out to second baseman McEwing. Franco then retired Teixeira on a grounder to shortstop Reyes to end the game. The Mets had an easy victory to close out the series in Arlington.
