The Mets faced the Giants on a Thursday night at Citi Field. The teams played the finale of a three-game series. Michael Cuddyer hit a run-scoring single in the ninth inning for a 5-4 Mets win over San Francisco.
Nori Aoki singled against Mets' starter Jonathon Niese to lead off the top of the first. Joe Panik got an infield single and Angel Pagan drew a walk to load the bases. Buster Posey singled to drive home Aoki. Justin Maxwell followed with a double play ground ball to second baseman Dilson Herrera on which Panik came home for a 2-0 Giants lead. Niese retired Brandon Crawford on a grounder to Herrera for the third out. San Francisco's Tim Lincecum then pitched a perfect bottom half.
Following scoreless second and third innings, Niese set down the side in order in the top of the fourth. Lucas Duda drew a walk with one out in the bottom of the inning. Cuddyer reached on an error by third baseman Matt Duffy and a foul pop-up by Wilmer Flores was caught by first baseman Posey. Travis d'Arnaud singled to drive home Duda and cut the Giants' lead to 2-1. Herrera walked to load the bases and Lincecum got Eric Campbell on a line drive to left fielder Aoki to close out the inning.
After retiring all three batters on infield ground balls in the top of the fifth, Niese doubled against Lincecum to open the bottom half. Granderson hit a single to send Niese to third base and Juan Lagares flied out to right fielder Maxwell. Duda followed with a sacrifice fly to score Niese and a double by Cuddyer plated Granderson for a 3-2 Mets lead. San Francisco reliever Yusmeiro Petit then retired Flores on a fly ball to Aoki for the inning's final out.
Maxwell reached on third baseman Campbell's error with two outs in the top of the sixth. Crawford connected for a two-run homer that put the Giants ahead, 4-3. Duffy grounded out to Herrera to end the inning and Petit set down the side in order in the bottom half. Niese retired the side 1-2-3 in the top of the seventh and pinch-hitter Darrell Ceciliani doubled against Giants' reliever Hunter Strickland to lead off the bottom of the inning. Granderson hit a single to score Ceciliani and tie the game at 4-4. Lagares singled and San Francisco's Javier Lopez got Duda on a double play grounder to Posey. The Giants' George Kontos then retired Cuddyer on a fly ball to Maxwell to end the inning.
Mets' reliever Erik Goeddel hurled a scoreless top of the eighth. Kontos gave up just a double to d'Arnaud in the bottom half and New York's Jeurys Familia yielded only a single to Andrew Susac in the top of the ninth. San Francisco's Sergio Romo hit Granderson with a pitch with one out in the bottom of the inning. Curtis advanced to second base on catcher Susac's passed ball and to third Lagares's ground out to second baseman Panik. Duda was given an intentional walk and Cuddyer came to bat. Michael delivered a single to score Granderson and bring the game to an end. The Mets had an exciting victory.
