Niese retired the Padres in order in each of the first two innings. Chris Carter started the bottom of the second with a double off San Diego starter Jon Garland. Carter moved to third base on a single by Rod Barajas and scored on another single by Jeff Francoeur. The inning ended suddenly when Garland got Ruben Tejada to hit into a triple play.

In the third, Chris Denorfia led off with a double for the Padres. Niese followed up with two strikeouts and got Jerry Hairston on a fly ball to end the inning. The Mets then added two runs in the bottom half when Niese scored on David Wright's ground out and Ike Davis singled home Jose Reyes.

Protecting a three-run lead, Niese dominated the San Diego lineup. Jonathon retired the Padres in order in each of the final six innings. To start the ninth, he got his fourteenth ground out of the game and then recorded two foul outs to finish off his one-hitter. The Mets had a split of the doubleheader on Niese's masterpiece.
