The Mets faced the Brewers on a Sunday afternoon in Milwaukee. The teams played the finale of a three-game series. Jeremy Hefner and two relievers teamed up for a three-hitter in a 2-1 Mets win.

Hefner and the Brewers’ Tom Gorzelanny each pitched three scoreless innings to start the game. Jeremy recorded five strikeouts in hurling one-hit ball while Gorzelanny fanned six hitters and yielded only a pair of singles. David Wright singled to lead off the top of the fourth. Marlon Byrd hit a double play ground ball to shortstop Jean Segura and a double by Josh Satin followed. Andrew Brown got an infield single on which third baseman Juan Francisco made an error that allowed Satin to come home. Gorzelanny struck out Anthony Recker to end the inning. Hefner then surrendered only a walk (and a stolen base) to Carlos Gomez in the bottom half.

Gorzelanny shut down the Mets in the top of the fifth. Hefner pitched a perfect bottom of the inning and Byrd got a one-out single in the top of the sixth. On his own hit, Marlon advanced to second base via a throwing error by Francisco. Satin followed with his second double to drive home Byrd for a 2-0 Mets lead. Gorzelanny retired both Brown and Recker on infield grounders for the final outs of the inning. Hefner then set down all three Milwaukee batters in the bottom half.

Hefner drew a one-out walk against Brewers’ reliever Michael Gonzalez in the top of the seventh. Eric Young lined out to center fielder Gomez and a single by Daniel Murphy sent Hefner to third base. Milwaukee’s Brandon Kintzler retired Wright on a ground ball to Francisco that closed out the inning. Leading off the bottom half, Jonathan Lucroy hit a home run. Hefner got Francisco to line out to second baseman Murphy and retired Rickie Weeks on a grounder to third baseman Wright. Jeremy then got Sean Halton to fly out to right fielder Byrd and finish off the inning.

Kintzler hurled a scoreless top of the eighth. New York’s Josh Edgin retired Logan Schafer on a fly ball to Byrd to begin the bottom half. Pinch-hitter Yuniesky Betancourt grounded out to Wright and a single by Norichika Aoki ensued. With Mets’ reliever Bobby Parnell on the mound facing Segura, Aoki stole second base. Parnell got Segura on a grounder to Murphy for the inning’s final out. Brewers’ reliever John Axford then gave up only a single to Young in the top of the ninth.

Gomez was retired on a ground ball to shortstop Omar Quintanilla to open the bottom of the ninth inning. Lucroy grounded out to Murphy and a walk to Francisco followed. Parnell then got Weeks to ground out to Quintanilla and end the game. The Mets had a victory to close out the weekend series.
