The Mets faced the Braves in a doubleheader on a Sunday afternoon. Sid Fernandez took the mound for New York in the opening game of the twinbill at Atlanta’s Fulton County Stadium. Fernandez and Roger McDowell combined for a three-hit shutout in a 4-0 Mets win.

Fernandez and the Braves’ Zane Smith each pitched four innings of scoreless ball to start the game. Sid issued four walks to the Atlanta batters while Smith limited the Mets to a pair of bases on balls and a fourth-inning single by Ray Knight. A double by Ronn Reynolds began the top of the fifth. Rafael Santana singled to send Reynolds to third base and advanced to second on Fernandez’s sacrifice bunt. Lenny Dykstra reached on an error by Smith to drive home Reynolds and stole second. Kelvin Chapman reached on shortstop Rafael Ramirez’s error to score Santana and move Dykstra to third. Knight hit a single to bring home Dykstra for a 3-0 Mets lead. Gary Carter fouled out to first baseman Gerald Perry and a single by George Foster plated Chapman with the fourth New York run. Smith retired John Christensen on an inning-ending fly ball to right fielder Brad Komminsk. Fernandez then shut down the Braves in the bottom half.

Braves’ reliever Rick Camp hurled a perfect top of the sixth. Glenn Hubbard drew a leadoff walk in the bottom of the inning. Dale Murphy went down on strikes and Terry Harper flied out to center fielder Dykstra. Komminsk singled for the first Atlanta hit and (following a wild pitch) a walk to Ken Oberkfell loaded the bases. Fernandez got Perry on a fly ball to left fielder Foster to end the inning and Camp pitched a scoreless top of the seventh. McDowell then yielded just a single to Ramirez in the bottom half.

Atlanta’s Gene Garber issued only a walk to Christensen in the top of the eighth. Murphy singled for the Braves’ third hit to open the bottom of the inning. Harper and Komminsk were both fanned and Oberkfell grounded to first baseman Keith Hernandez for the inning’s final out. In the top of the ninth, Garber set down the first two Mets hitters and gave up a single to Dykstra. Chapman followed with a double on which Lenny tried to score. On the play, Ramirez took a throw from left fielder Harper and relayed to catcher Rick Cerone for an out on Dykstra to finish off the inning.

Perry grounded out to second baseman Chapman to start the bottom of the ninth. Cerone was retired on a ground ball to shortstop Santana. McDowell then got pinch-hitter Chris Chambliss on a grounder to Chapman that ended the game. The Mets had a three-hit shutout victory to begin the doubleheader.
