Johan and Reds' starter Matt Maloney each pitched scoreless ball over the first two innings. In the top of the third, Santana retired the side in order on three fly balls to center fielder Angel Pagan. Johan then connected for a home run off Maloney for a 1-0 Met lead in the bottom of the third.
Santana shut down the Reds on one-hit from the fourth inning to the sixth. Jose Reyes led off the bottom of the sixth with a bunt single. Reyes moved to second base on a ground out and David Wright was given an intentional walk. After advancing a base on another out, Reyes and Wright both scored on Jason Bay's single to center field. Maloney was replaced by Cincinnati reliever Logan Ondrusek before the end of the inning.
Santana pitched two hitless innings in the seventh and eighth. In the ninth, the Reds put two runners on base with one out. Johan got Jonny Gomes to line out to first baseman Ike Davis and a force play grounder from Drew Stubbs to end the game. The Mets had a victory on Santana's shutout, enhanced by his own homer.
