The Mets faced the Phillies on a Monday night at Citi Field. The teams played the opener of a three-game series. Juan Lagares and Travis d'Arnaud drove in a combined five runs as the Mets defeated Philadelphia, 7-1.

Mets’ starter Bartolo Colon gave up only a single to Marlon Byrd in the top of the first. Curtis Granderson drew a walk against the Phils’ A. J. Burnett to lead off the bottom half. Daniel Murphy hit a double to score Granderson and advanced to third base on David Wright’s ground out to second baseman Reid Brignac. Lucas Duda singled to bring home Murphy with the Mets’ second run. Chris Young flied out to left fielder Domonic Brown and a double by d’Arnaud ensued. Lagares doubled to plate both Duda and d’Arnaud for a 4-0 Mets lead. Burnett then retired Ruben Tejada on a grounder to third baseman Cody Asche to close out the inning.

Colon and Burnett each pitched scoreless ball from the second inning to the fourth. Bartolo shut down the Phillies again in the top of the fifth and Duda drew a walk with two outs in the bottom half. Young singled and d’Arnaud followed with a three-run homer to extend the Mets’ lead to 7-0. Lagares got a single and moved to second base on a wild pitch. Burnett then retired Tejada on a foul fly ball to right fielder Byrd for the inning’s third out.

The Phils failed to score after loading the bases in the top of the sixth. Philadelphia reliever Mario Hollands hurled a perfect bottom half and Colon yielded just a single to Andres Blanco in the top of the seventh. Hollands set down the side in order in the bottom of the inning and Brown doubled with two outs against Colon in the top of the eighth. Carlos Ruiz hit a double to drive home Brown with the Phils’ first run of the game. Mets’ reliever Josh Edgin retired pinch-hitter Darin Ruf on a grounder to third baseman Wright to end the inning. D’Arnaud got a leadoff double against the Phillies’ Phillippe Aumont in the bottom half. Lagares grounded out to shortstop Jimmy Rollins and a walk to Tejada ensued. Aumont then got pinch-hitter Bobby Abreu to hit a ground ball to second baseman Blanco for an inning-ending double play.

Mets’ reliever Dana Eveland retired Brignac on a grounder to first baseman Duda to start the top of the ninth. Blanco singled and Ben Revere got a single that hit Eveland, who had to be removed from the game. New York’s Vic Black got Rollins to fly out to center fielder Lagares. Byrd singled to load the bases and Black struck out Ryan Howard to bring the game to an end. The Mets had a series-opening victory.
