The Mets faced the Rockies on a Sunday afternoon at Shea Stadium. The teams played the finale of a four-game series. Rico Brogna hit a run-scoring single in the 10th inning for a 2-1 Mets win over Colorado.
Pete Harnisch and the Rockies’ Marvin Freeman each started the game with three scoreless innings pitched. Harnisch gave up just a single to Larry Walker in the top of the fourth and Brogna drew a walk with one out in the bottom half. Bobby Bonilla hit a double to drive home Brogna with the first run of the game. Freeman then struck out Joe Orsulak and retired Todd Hundley on a ground ball to shortstop Walt Weiss to end the inning.
Jason Bates doubled to lead off the top of the fifth. Bates moved to third base on Jorge Brito’s sacrifice bunt and scored the tying run on a double by Weiss. Freeman went down on strikes and Eric Young flied out to right fielder Ryan Thompson to finish off the inning. To begin the bottom half, Thompson walked and stole second base. Jose Vizcaino grounded out to second baseman Young to send Thompson to third. Harnisch was retired on a grounder to Weiss. Brett Butler then lined back to Freeman for the inning’s final out.
Harnisch shut down the Mountain Men in the top of the sixth. Freeman held the Mets to a single by Brogna in the bottom half and Brito hit a one-out single in the top of the seventh. Weiss flied out to Thompson and a single by pinch-hitter John Vander Wal advanced Brito to third base. Harnisch retired Young on a pop-up to second baseman Edgardo Alfonzo that ended the inning. Colorado reliever Steve Reed then hurled a perfect bottom half.
Harnisch yielded only a single to Andres Galarraga in the top of the eighth. Butler got a bunt single against Reed with one out in the bottom of the inning. Alfonzo singled and Rockies’ reliever Mike Munoz got Brogna to fly out to left fielder Dante Bichette. Munoz retired Bonilla on a fly ball to right fielder Walker to close out the inning and the Mets’ John Franco pitched a scoreless top of the ninth. Colorado’s Mark Thompson then set down the side in order in the bottom half to send the game onward.
Franco hurled a scoreless top of the 10th inning. Vizcino got a leadoff single in the bottom half. Pinch-hitter Tim Bogar’s sacrifice bunt advanced Vizcaino to second base. Jose moved to third on Butler’s ground out to first baseman Galarraga and a walk to Alfonzo ensued. Brogna came to bat and delivered a single that scored Vizcaino with the winning run. The Mets had an extra-inning victory to close out the series.
