The Mets faced the Pirates on a Sunday afternoon in Pittsburgh. The teams played the finale of a three-game series. The Mets scored three runs in the first inning and defeated the Bucs, 4-2.

Eric Young singled against Pirates’ starter Gerrit Cole to lead off the top of the first. Daniel Murphy flied out to center fielder Andrew McCutchen and a single by David Wright advanced Young to third base. Marlon Byrd hit a ground-rule double to score Young with the first run of the game. Josh Satin drew a walk to load the bases and Kirk Nieuwenhuis popped out to shortstop Clint Barmes. John Buck singled to drive home Wright and Byrd for a 3-0 Mets lead. Cole struck out Omar Quintanilla to end the inning. Mets’ starter Dillon Gee then pitched a perfect bottom half.

After a scoreless second, Cole shut down the Mets in the top of the third. With one out in the bottom of the inning, Cole got an infield single and moved to second base on an error by Gee. Sterling Marte followed with a ground-rule double to bring home Cole with the Bucs’ first run of the game. Jordy Mercer was retired on a fly ball to right fielder Byrd. Gee then got McCutchen to ground out to third baseman Wright and finish off the inning.

Gee and Cole each hurled scoreless ball in the fourth and fifth innings. Pittsburgh reliever Jeanmar Gomez yielded only a single to Buck in the top of the sixth. Gee set down the side in order in the bottom half and Young singled with one out in the top of the seventh. Murphy followed with a triple that plated Young and increased the Mets’ lead to 4-1. Wright hit a ground ball on which third baseman Pedro Alvarez tagged out Murphy. Byrd grounded back to Gomez for the inning’s final out and Barmes hit a two-out double against Gee in the bottom half. Pinch-hitter Travis Snider drew a walk. Mets’ reliever Scott Atchison then threw a called third strike past Marte to close out the inning.

Pirates’ reliever Vin Mazzaro retired the side 1-2-3 in the top of the eighth. Mercer singled against the Mets’ LaTroy Hawkins to begin the bottom half. McCutchen doubled to send Mercer to third base and Alvarez was called out on strikes. Jose Tabata grounded out to second baseman Murphy to bring home Mercer with the second Pittsburgh run. Hawkins retired Garrett Jones on an inning-ending foul fly ball to left fielder Young. Mazzaro then shut down the Mets in the top of the ninth.

Mets’ reliever Bobby Parnell got Michael McKenry to fly out to center fielder Nieuwenhuis to open the bottom of the ninth inning. Barmes hit a single to left field. Pinch-hitter Russell Martin singled and Marte flied out to Nieuwenhuis. Parnell then retired Mercer on a fly ball to Byrd for the final out of the game. The Mets had a victory to close out the series.
