Mets’ starter Ron Darling struck out Bob Horner and got Ken Griffey on a force play ground ball to first baseman Keith Hernandez for the third out. Lenny Dykstra tripled against the Braves’ Doyle Alexander to lead off the bottom half. Wally Backman grounded out to first baseman Horner to drive home Dykstra for a 1-0 Mets lead. Hernandez lined out to right fielder Omar Moreno and a single by Gary Carter ensued. Alexander then fanned Darryl Strawberry to close out the inning.

After scoreless second and third innings, Horner singled to begin the top of the fourth. Griffey went down on strikes and Andres Thomas popped out to second baseman Backman. Bruce Benedict hit a single and Glenn Hubbard drew a walk to load the bases. Alexander flied out to center fielder Dykstra to end the inning and hurled a perfect bottom half. Oberkfell got a one-out double in the top of the fifth. Darling retired Murphy on a fly ball to Dykstra and fanned Horner to finish off the inning. Alexander then set down the Mets in order in the bottom half.

A single by Griffey opened the top of the sixth. Thomas was retired on a fly ball to Dykstra. Griffey stole second base and Benedict drew a walk. Hubbard followed with a single on which Dykstra threw to catcher Carter for an out at home on Griffey. Darling got Alexander on a fly ball to Dykstra for the inning’s third out. With one out in the bottom half, Lenny homered for the Mets’ second run of the game. Backman flied out to left fielder Griffey. Alexander then got Hernandez to line out to center fielder Murphy and end the inning.

Darling held the Braves to a single by Oberkfell in the top of the seventh. Alexander yielded only an infield single to Strawberry in the bottom half and Ron set down the side in order in the top of the eighth. Alexander retired all three batters in the bottom of the inning and Hubbard grounded out to Backman to begin the top of the ninth. Pinch-hitter Chris Chambliss was retired on a fly ball to left fielder Mookie Wilson. Moreno then grounded back to Darling for the final out of the game. The Mets had a victory on Ron’s shutout and a sweep of the series.
