The Mets faced the Reds on a Saturday night at Citi Field. The teams played the second of three games in a weekend series. Johan Santana pitched seven shutout innings in a 4-0 Mets win over Cincinnati.

Joey Votto and Brandon Phillips got consecutive singles against Santana with two outs in the top of the first. Johan retired Ramon Hernandez on an inning-ending fly ball to center fielder Angel Pagan, who singled against the Reds’ Johnny Cueto to begin the bottom half. Luis Castillo drew a walk and David Wright got a single to load the bases. Gary Sheffield popped out to second baseman Phillips and a single by Jeff Francoeur drove home Pagan and Castillo. Daniel Murphy walked to reload the bases and Omir Santos singled to score Wright for a 3-0 Mets lead. Cueto then got Alex Cora to fly out to left fielder Jonny Gomes and struck out Santana to finish off the inning.

Santana set down the side in order in the top of the second. Pagan got a leadoff triple in the bottom half. Castillo hit a single to bring home Pagan with the Mets’ fourth run of the game. Wright grounded out to third baseman Edwin Encarnacion and a fly ball by Sheffield was caught by center fielder Willy Taveras. Francoeur was struck out to end the inning and Santana gave up only a double to Chris Dickerson in the top of the third. Cueto then yielded just a single to Santos in the bottom half.

Santana and Cueto each hurled scoreless fourth and fifth innings. Johan retired the side 1-2-3 in the top of the sixth and drew a walk against Cincinnati reliever Josh Roenicke to lead off the bottom half. Pagan hit a force play grounder to shortstop Jerry Hairston and stole second and third base. Roenicke then retired Castillo on a fly ball to Taveras and fanned Wright to close out the inning.

Hernandez singled to begin the top of the seventh. Encarnacion popped out to second baseman Castillo and a walk to Gomes ensued. Hairston was retired on a fly ball to left fielder Sheffield. Pinch-hitter Micah Owings grounded back to Santana for the inning’s final out. Reds’ reliever Carlos Fisher then gave up only a single to Francoeur in the bottom half.

Mets’ reliever Pedro Feliciano pitched a scoreless top of the eighth. Fisher yielded just a single to Jeremy Reed in the bottom of the inning and Phillips grounded back to New York’s Francisco Rodriguez to lead off the top of the ninth. Hernandez flied out to Pagan and a walk to Encarnacion followed. Rodriguez then got Gomes to fly out to left fielder Reed and bring the game to an end. The Mets had a shutout victory.
