A. J. Pollock doubled against Syndergaard to lead off the top of the first inning. Pollock stole third base and David Peralta flied out to center fielder Juan Lagares. Paul Goldschmidt hit a sacrifice fly to score Pollock for a 1-0 D'Backs lead. Yasmany Tomas singled and Syndergaard struck out Jake Lamb to end the inning. Ruben Tejada got a one-out single against Arizona's Chase Anderson in the bottom half. Daniel Murphy flied out to center fielder Pollock and a walk to Wilmer Flores ensued. Lucas Duda slugged a three-run homer and Michael Cuddyer followed with a home run to put the Mets ahead, 4-1. Anderson then got Kevin Plawecki on a ground ball to third baseman Lamb for the inning's final out.
Syndergaard fanned Welington Castillo to start a perfect top of the second. Anderson surrendered only a walk to Curtis Granderson in the bottom half and took a called third strike to begin the top of the third. Pollock lined out to third baseman Murphy and a double by Peralta ensued. Goldschmidt was struck out to end the inning and Anderson retired the side in order in the bottom half. Castillo drew a walk with two outs in the top of the fourth. Syndergaard struck out Chris Owings to finish off the inning. The Mets then failed to score despite three singles against Anderson in the bottom half.
Syndergaard chalked up strikeouts of both Ahmed and Pollock in a scoreless top of the fifth. Murphy and Flores got back-to-back singles against Anderson with one out in the bottom of the inning. Duda grounded back to Diamondbacks' reliever Andrew Chafin for an inning-ending double play and Noah struck out all three batters in the top of the sixth. Chafin retired the side 1-2-3 in the bottom half and Syndergaard fanned Owings and Ahmed in a perfect top of the seventh. The Snakes' David Hernandez and Oliver Perez then combined to pitch a scoreless bottom of the inning.
Pollock drew a walk with one out in the top of the eighth. Syndergaard fanned Peralta for his thirteenth strikeout and retired Goldschmidt on a foul pop-up to catcher Plawecki to close out the inning. The Mets failed to score after loading the bases against Arizona reliever Josh Collmenter in the bottom half and Tomas hit a triple against New York's Jeurys Familia to open the top of the ninth. Lamb was called out on strikes and Castillo singled to bring home Tomas with the Diamondbacks' second run. Familia then got Owings to hit a force play grounder to shortstop Tejada and retired Ahmed on a pop-up to Murphy that ended the game. The Mets had a victory to start the weekend series.
