Jonathon Niese is a left-handed pitcher for the Mets. He was selected by the team in the seventh round of the free-agent draft in 2005. Niese has pitched for the Mets at the major league level since 2008
Niese appeared in a total of eight games for the Mets in 2008 and 2009. He recorded two wins and 29 strikeouts in 39 and two-thirds innings pitched. On September 13, 2008, Jonathon hurled eight scoreless innings for his first major league win (and hit a single) in a 5-0 Mets victory over the Braves in a doubleheader nightcap at Shea Stadium. He also pitched seven innings and chalked up the win in a 10-3 Mets triumph over the Astros at Houston on July 25, 2009.
In 2010, Niese started 30 games for the Mets. He had nine wins and a team-leading 148 strikeouts during the season. At Philadelphia on April 30, Jonathon pitched seven innings of four-hit ball for the win in a 9-1 Mets victory over the Phillies. He hurled a one-hit shutout in a 3-0 Mets triumph over the Padres in the second game of a doubleheader at Citi Field on June 10. Niese chalked up eight strikeouts in seven innings and hit a run-scoring double in the Mets’ 5-3 win over the Nationals on July 2 at Washington. He had six innings pitched for the win in an 8-2 Mets victory over the Cardinals at Citi Field on July 27. Jonathon also pitched six innings and had a pair of RBI singles in the Mets’ 18-5 win over the Cubs on September 5 at Chicago.
Niese had 157 and one-third innings pitched in 2011. He won 11 games during the year. At Citi Field on April 24, Jonathon was the winning pitcher in the Mets’ 8-4 triumph over the Diamondbacks. He pitched seven scoreless innings for the win in a 3-0 Mets victory over the Nationals on May 18 at Citi Field. Niese fanned seven batters and recorded the win in the Mets’ 14-5 rout of the Rangers at Texas on June 25. He hurled seven innings for the win in an 11-2 Mets victory over the Phillies on July 16 at Citi Field. Jonathon also got the win in the Mets’ 11-7 triumph over the Braves at Citi Field on August 6.
Jonathon had a 13-9 won-lost record in 2012. He struck out 155 batters in 30 starts for the season. At Citi Field on April 8, Niese had seven strikeouts in six innings and recorded the win in the Mets’ 7-5 victory over the Braves. He pitched six and two-thirds scoreless inning for the win in a 5-0 Mets triumph over the Phillies on April 14 at Philadelphia. Jonathon had ten strikeouts in six shutout innings for the win in the Mets’ 6-1 victory over the Cardinals at Citi Field on June 3. He pitched eight innings of three-hit ball and hit a two-run single in an 11-1 Mets win over the Phillies on July 3 at Citi Field. Niese fanned seven hitters in seven and one-third scoreless innings for the win in the Mets’ 2-0 victory over the Nationals at Washington on August 18. He also hurled six innings, singled twice and scored a run in a 7-3 Mets win over the Brewers on September 14 at Milwaukee.
In the season opener in 2013, Niese had two singles, a walk, a run batted in and six and one-third innings pitched for the win in the Mets' 11-2 victory over the Padres at Citi Field. He had seven and one-third innings pitched for the win in a 5-2 Mets triumph over the Cardinals at St. Louis on May 16. In his first game back after an injury, Jonathon pitched six innings, singled and got the win in the Mets' 9-5 victory over the Diamondbacks at Arizona on August 11. He had nine strikeouts in six innings pitched and scored a run in a 5-2 Mets win over the Padres at San Diego on August 16. Niese hurled a three-hit shutout and hit a three-run double in the Mets' 5-0 triumph over the Phillies on August 27 at Citi Field. He fanned seven batters in six and two-thirds innings pitched for the win in a 4-3 Mets victory over the Marlins at Citi Field on September 13. Jonathon pitched seven innings for the win in the Mets' 4-2 triumph over the Reds at Cincinnati on September 24.
