The Mets and Royals made a trade of outfielders during Spring Training in 1999. Jonathan Guzman was sent to the Kansas City organization in exchange for Shane Halter. Guzman was a 20-year-old rookie-level prospect with no previous professional experience. Halter batted .242 as a Royals player over the previous two seasons.

Halter spent the '99 season with the Mets' AAA-level team in Norfolk. He appeared in 7 games with the Mets in September, but never got to bat for the team. Shane was claimed on waivers by the Detroit Tigers in March of 2000.

Guzman spent three seasons in the Royals' minor league system and never reached the majors.
