Johan Santana is a left-handed pitcher for the Mets. He joined the team in a trade after a successful eight-year period with the Minnesota Twins. Santana has been with the Mets since 2008.
In ’08, Santana led the National League with a 2.53 earned run average. He recorded 206 strikeouts to set a new Mets seasonal record for lefthanders. In his debut with the team on March 31, Johan pitched seven innings of three-hit ball and got the win in a 7-2 Mets victory at Florida. He struck out ten batters and chalked up a win in the Mets’ 6-4 triumph at Philadelphia on April 18. Santana pitched seven and two-thirds innings for the win in a 7-4 Mets victory over the Yankees on May 17. He had five strikeouts in five scoreless innings and recorded a win in the Mets’ 3-0 triumph over the Giants at Shea Stadium on July 9. Johan pitched a three-hit shutout in a 4-0 Mets win at Pittsburgh on August 17. At Shea on September 7, he hurled seven and one-third innings for the win in the Mets’ 6-3 victory over the Phillies. Santana fanned ten batters in eight innings pitched and got the win in a 6-2 Mets triumph over the Cubs on September 23 at Shea. He also recorded nine strikeouts (the last of which broke Jon Matlack’s team mark for lefties) in pitching a three-hit shutout for a 2-0 Mets win over the Marlins at Shea on September 27.
Santana had a 13-9 won-lost record in 2009. He led the Mets with 146 strikeouts and a 3.13 ERA for the season. On April 18, Johan hurled seven scoreless innings and was the winning pitcher in the Mets’ 1-0 victory over the Brewers at Citi Field. He struck out ten hitters in six innings and got the win in a 4-3 Mets victory over the Nationals at Citi Field on April 24. Santana chalked up the win in the Mets’ 9-6 victory at San Francisco on May 16. He recorded eleven strikeouts in six innings and got the win in a 7-4 Mets triumph over the Nationals on May 27 at Citi Field. Johan pitched seven inning for the win in the Mets’ 3-2 triumph over the Cardinals at Citi Field on June 25. He compiled seven innings of four-hit ball and chalked up the win in a 7-0 Mets victory over the Rockies on July 30 at Citi Field. Santana also pitched eight innings and recorded the win in the Mets’ 5-1 triumph at San Diego on August 9.
In 2010, Santana pitched 199 innings in 29 games started. He recorded 11 wins during the year. On April 5, Johan was the winning-pitcher in the Mets’ season-opening 7-1 victory over the Marlins at Citi Field. He had seven and two-thirds innings pitched and recorded the win in a 6-4 Mets triumph over the Yankees at Citi Field on May 23. Santana chalked up the win in the Mets’ 7-6 triumph at Cleveland on June 15. He pitched a three-hit shutout in which he homered in a 3-0 Mets victory over the Reds on July 6 at Citi Field. Johan struck out ten batters and hurled a four-hit shutout in the Mets’ 4-0 win over the Rockies at Citi Field on August 12. He also recorded the win in a 4-2 Mets triumph at Atlanta on September 2.
After missing the 2011 season with an injured left shoulder, Santana returned to the Mets in 2012. As the starter in the season opener at Citi Field on April 5, he pitched five innings of two-hit scoreless ball in an eventual 1-0 Mets win over the Braves. Johan recorded eleven strikeouts in six and two-thirds innings in a 2-1 Mets victory over the Marlins on April 24 at Citi Field. He pitched a complete game shutout in the Mets' 9-0 win over the Padres at Citi Field on May 26. Santana became the first Mets pitcher ever to record a no-hitter in the team's 8-0 triumph over the Cardinals on June 1 at Citi Field. He hurled eight scoreless innings and got the win in a 5-0 Mets victory over the Dodgers at Los Angeles on June 30.
