In 1975, the Mets and Angels made a deal during spring training. Catcher Ike Hampton was sent to California in exchange for pitcher Ken Sanders. Hampton had been in the Mets' minor league system for the previous five years and appeared in four games with the team in 1974. Sanders was a veteran who had eight years of major league experience.
Sanders pitched in 60 games as a reliever for the Mets in 1975 and 1976. He had 2 wins and 3 losses with a 2.60 earned run average as a member of the team. Before the end of the '76 season, Sanders was sold to the Kansas City Royals.
Hampton batted .214 in 109 games with the Angels from 1975 to 1979. He had 13 hits in 1977, which was his only full season in the major leagues. Ike was released by the Angels before the beginning of the 1980 season.
