During Spring Training in 1971, the Mets traded pitchers Dean Chance and Bill Denehy to the Detroit Tigers for pitcher Jerry Robertson. A former Cy Young winner with the Angels, Chance appeared in three games for the Mets in 1970 and Denehy spent the season in the minor leagues. Robertson appeared in 11 games for Detroit in '70.
The deal had no effect for either team. Chance and Denehy each pitched in 31 games for Detroit in '71 to end their careers. Dean had a 4-6 won-lost record and Bill did not record a victory during the year. Meanwhile, Robertson pitched in 37 games for the Mets' AAA-level Tidewater team in Norfolk, Virginia in his final season in pro ball.
