Daniel Murphy is an infielder for the Mets. He joined the team in 2008. Murphy had split time between the infield and outfield before settling in as a full-time second baseman.
Selected by the Mets in the 2006 draft, Murphy was called up to the parent club during the ’08 season. He batted .313 in 49 games played with the team. At Shea Stadium on August 5, Daniel got his first major league run batted in with a double in the Mets’ 6-5 win over the Padres. He hit his first home run as a major leaguer in an 8-6 Mets victory over the Marlins at Shea on August 9. Murphy had two singles, a homer and three RBIs in a 12-0 Mets win at Washington on August 13. He drove in the Mets’ first two runs with a first-inning single in the team’s 6-3 victory over the Braves at Shea on August 20. Daniel also hit a two-run homer that put the Mets ahead to stay in a 9-5 triumph at Atlanta on September 19.
Murphy led the Mets with 155 games played in 2009. He had a team-high 12 home runs and drove in 63 runs for the year. In the season opener at Cincinnati on April 6, Daniel had a homer and an RBI ground out for both of the Mets’ runs in a 2-1 victory over the Reds. He hit a two-run homer in the first inning of the Mets’ 7-4 victory at Philadelphia on May 1. Murphy had a run-scoring single, a two-run double and a two-run homer in a 7-4 Mets triumph over the Nationals at Citi Field on May 27. He singled and homered in a 6-4 Mets win over the Cardinals on June 22 at Citi Field. Daniel had a single, a double and two RBIs in the Mets’ 9-7 victory over the Reds at Citi Field on July 12. He singled home the winning run in the ninth inning for a 3-2 Mets triumph over the Giants on August 16 at Citi Field. Murphy had three runs batted in with a pair of doubles in the Mets’ 10-3 win at Florida on August 27. He drove in all the Mets’ runs with a single, triple and homer in a 4-2 victory over the Cubs on September 6 at Citi Field. Daniel had a double, a triple and two RBIs in the Mets’ 6-2 win over the Nationals at Citi Field on September 20. He also hit a two-run homer in a 7-1 Mets triumph over the Astros on October 2 at Citi Field.
After missing a season with a knee injury, Murphy had a .320 batting average in 2011. He scored 49 runs and accumulated 175 total bases during the season. On April 23, Daniel had a pair of run-scoring singles that provided the difference in the Mets’ 6-4 victory over the Diamondbacks at Citi Field. He had a solo homer and a two-run double in a 6-3 Mets win at Washington on April 27. Murphy hit a home run that proved to be the game-winner in the Mets’ 2-1 triumph over the Yankees on May 20. At Citi Field on May 29 and May 30, he had totals of six hits (five singles and a double) and four runs scored in the Mets’ 9-5 and 7-3 wins over the Phillies and Pirates, respectively. Daniel batted .455 (15-for-33) with 11 RBIs during an eight-game hitting streak between June 22 and June 30. He singled three times and drove in a run in a 3-2 Mets victory over the Yankees in 10 innings on July 3 at Citi Field. Murphy had two singles, a homer and two RBIs in the Mets’ 11-2 win over the Phillies at Citi Field on July 16. At Cincinnati on July 27, he singled and doubled twice each in an 8-2 Mets triumph over the Reds. Daniel also had a run-scoring single in a 6-5 Mets defeat to the Braves on August 7 at Citi Field. In this game, he suffered an injury that ended his season prematurely.
Murphy became the Mets’ regular season baseman in 2012. At Citi Field on April 9, he had a run-scoring single in the ninth inning that gave the Mets a 4-3 win over the Nationals. Daniel singled four times and drove in a run in the Mets’ 4-3 victory over the Diamondbacks on May 5 at Citi Field. He had two homers, a double and four RBIs in a 17-1 Mets triumph over the Cubs at Chicago on June 27. Murphy singled, doubled twice, tripled and drove in four runs in an 11-1 Mets victory over the Phillies on July 3 at Citi Field. He had three singles in a 9-5 Mets win over the Phils in 10 innings at Philadelphia on August 28. On September 14, Daniel hit a two-run homer in the Mets' 7-3 triumph over the Brewers at Milwaukee.
In 2013, Murphy hit a run-scoring triple that put the Mets ahead to stay in a 7-3 win over the Marlins at Citi Field on April 6. He homered in a 4-3 Mets victory over the Marlins on April 7 at Citi Field. Daniel had two singles, two doubles, three runs scored and four RBIs in the Mets' 16-5 win over the Twins at Minnesota on April 12. He singled and doubled twice each and scored two runs in a 5-2 Mets triumph over the Cardinals at St. Louis on May 16. Murphy hit a home run to put the Mets ahead to stay for a 4-3 victory over the Cubs at Chicago on May 19.
