During the 1963 season, the Mets made a trade with the Reds. The team sent Charlie Neal and Sammy Taylor to Cincinnati for Jesse Gonder. Neal was one of the Mets most productive players in their first two years while Taylor and Gonder were experienced catchers.
Gonder made the deal a good one for the Mets. He had a .302 batting average with the team over the rest of the '63 season and hit .270 in 131 games played in 1964. Jesse compiled a .271 average with 14 home runs in three seasons as a Met.
Neal batted .134 in 34 games for the Reds to end his career in '63. Taylor went hitless in three games with the Cincinnati team and was traded to the Cleveland Indians on August 1.
