The Mets had dropped out of the race and Carlos Beltran's $117 million contract was expiring. The contract prohibited the Mets from offering Beltran arbitration, denying the Mets significant compensation when Beltran left as a free agent.

The Mets shopped Beltran for prospects, and received a better offer than most people expected. 21-year-old right-handed pitcher Zack Wheeler was ranked 55 among prospects by Baseball America before 2011, and number 35 before 2012. The Mets took the deal.

Wheeler pitched well for the Mets minor league teams, and is expected to reach the big leagues in mid-2013, shortly after his 23rd birthday.
