The Mets and Phillies made a trade during Spring Training in 1988. Infielder Bill Almon went to Philadelphia in exchange for pitchers Shawn Barton and Vladimir Perez. Almon, who was entering his 14th major league season, batted .241 in 49 games for the Mets in 1987. Barton and Perez were minor league prospects.

Neither Barton nor Perez got into a game with the Mets. Shawn pitched at AA-level Jackson (Mississippi) and AAA-level Tidewater (Norfolk, Virginia) over three years. He was released by the Mets during the 1990 season. Vladimir appeared in 87 games in the Mets' system between '88 and '90. He never reached the major league level.

Almon played in 20 games for the Phillies in '88. He collected three hits in 26 times at bat. Bill was released by the Philadelphia team on June 16, ending his career.
