Team: St. Louis Cardinals
Sent: Benny Ayala
Received: Doug Clarey

The Mets and Cardinals made a trade during Spring Training in 1977. The team sent outfielder Benny Ayala to St. Louis in exchange for second baseman Doug Clarey. Ayala had appeared in 45 games for the Mets in 1974 and 1976. Clarey was a five-year minor leaguer whose only major league hit was a two-run homer in the 16th inning to win a game for the Cards.

Neither the Mets nor the Cardinals benefited from the trade. Clarey hit .125 in 28 games for the Mets' AAA-level Tidewater team in Norfolk, Virginia in '77. He never returned to the major leagues. Ayala spent two seasons in the Cardinals' minor league system and played in only one game for the St. Louis team.
