August 9, 2014: Duda's Single in 11th Beats Phillies

The Mets faced the Phillies on a Saturday night in Philadelphia. The teams played the second of four games in a series. Lucas Duda hit a run-scoring single in the 11th inning for a 2-1 Mets win over the Phils.
Dillon Gee and the Phillies’ Cole Hamels each started the game with four scoreless innings pitched. Duda singled to lead off the top of the fifth. With Travis d'Arnaud at bat, Duda advanced to second base on a catcher Carlos Ruiz’s passed ball. D’Arnaud drew a walk and Juan Lagares hit a single to load the bases. Wilmer Flores hit a force play ground ball to third baseman Cody Asche to drive home Duda for a 1-0 Mets lead. Hamels got Gee to foul out to Ruiz on a bunt attempt and retired Curtis Granderson on an inning-ending fly ball to left fielder Domonic Brown. Dillon then set down the side in order in the bottom half.
After a scoreless sixth, Hamels gave up only a double to Lagares in the top of the seventh. Ruiz homered with two outs in the bottom half to tie the game at 1-1. Asche drew a walk and Gee retired pinch-hitter Grady Sizemore on a grounder to shortstop Flores that finished off the inning. Philadelphia reliever Jake Diekman hurled a perfect top of the eighth and the Mets’ Josh Edgin yielded just a single to Jimmy Rollins in the bottom half. The Phils’ Jonathan Papelbon retired the side 1-2-3 in the top of the ninth. New York’s Vic Black then set down all three batters in the bottom half to send the game onward.
Phillies’ reliever Ken Giles pitched a perfect top of the 10th. The Mets’ Dana Eveland retired the side in order in the bottom of the inning and Granderson singled against Philadelphia’s Antonio Bastardo to begin the top of the 11th. Murphy flied out to Brown and a single by David Wright sent Granderson to third base. Eric Campbell drew a walk to load the bases and Duda hit a single to score Granderson with the go-ahead run. Phils’ reliever Justin De Fratus retired d’Arnaud on a foul pop-up to Asche. De Fratus then threw a called third strike past Lagares to close out the inning.
Mets’ reliever Jeurys Familia retired Rollins on a fly ball to right fielder Granderson to open the bottom of the 11th. Chase Utley grounded out to catcher d’Arnaud and a single by Ryan Howard followed. Marlon Byrd drew a walk and Familia got Brown to hit a ground ball to Flores for the game’s final out. The Mets had a victory in extra innings.
