The Mets faced the Padres on a Tuesday night at Shea Stadium. The teams played the opener of a three-game series. David Wright had a pair of run-scoring singles to give the Mets a 3-2 win over San Diego.

Mets’ starter Steve Trachsel set down the side in order in the top of the first inning. The Padres’ Woody Williams yielded just a double to Carlos Beltran in the bottom half and Todd Walker singled with two outs in the top of the second. Geoff Blum hit a two-run homer and Josh Barfield flied out to left fielder Endy Chavez to end the inning. Wright got a single to lead off the bottom half. Jose Valentin drew a walk and Chavez reached on Williams’ error to load the bases. Lastings Milledge followed with a double play ground ball to shortstop Blum on which Wright scored to cut the San Diego lead to 2-1. Trachsel then grounded out to third baseman Walker to finish off the inning.

Trachsel pitched a scoreless top of the third. Paul Lo Duca hit a one-out single in the bottom half. Beltran doubled and Carlos Delgado was walked intentionally to load the bases. Wright singled to bring home Lo Duca and tie the game at 2-2. Valentin was retired on a pop-up to second baseman Barfield. Williams then got Chavez to pop out to Blum and end the inning.

After a scoreless fourth, Trachsel gave up only a single to Williams in the top of the fifth. With one out in the bottom half, Beltran hit his third double of the game. Delgado drew a walk and Wright singled to score Beltran for a one-run Mets lead. Valentin went down on strikes and Chavez was retired on an inning-ending ground ball to first baseman Adrian Gonzalez. Mike Piazza singled against Trachsel with two outs in the top of the sixth. Gonzalez hit a double off Mets’ reliever Royce Ring and a walk to Walker loaded the bases. Ring got Blum on a force play grounder to third baseman Wright that closed out the inning. Williams then hurled a scoreless bottom half.

Mets’ reliever Darren Oliver retired the side in order in the top of the seventh. San Diego’s Doug Brocail pitched a perfect bottom of the inning and Mike Cameron drew a one-out walk against Oliver in the top of the eighth. With New York’s Roberto Hernandez on the mound facing Piazza, Cameron stole second base. Hernandez retired Piazza on a fly ball to center fielder Beltran. Mets’ reliever Pedro Feliciano got Gonzalez to ground out to first baseman Delgado and end the inning. Chavez doubled off the Padres’ Scott Williamson with one out in the bottom half. Milledge was struck out as Chavez stole third. Williamson then retired pinch-hitter Cliff Floyd on a ground ball to Gonzalez for the inning’s third out.

Mets’ reliever Billy Wagner struck out pinch-hitter Mark Bellhorn to start the top of the ninth. Blum drew a walk and Barfield flied out to Beltran. Josh Bard hit a single to left field. Wagner then fanned Dave Roberts for the final out of the game. The Mets had a victory to begin the series.
