Against the Cubs’ Carlos Zambrano (no relation to Victor), Carlos Beltran reached on third baseman Aramis Ramirez’s error with two outs in the bottom half. Cliff Floyd hit a single on which Beltran came all the way home with the first run of the game. On his own hit, Floyd advanced to second base via a throw. David Wright singled to score Floyd for a 2-0 Mets lead. Carlos Zambrano then retired Mike Cameron on a ground ball to second baseman Neifi Perez to close out the inning.
After a scoreless second, Victor Zambrano set down the side in order in the top of the third. Miguel Cairo got a leadoff single in the bottom half. Beltran and Floyd drew consecutive walks to load the bases and Wright hit a sacrifice fly to drive home Cairo. Cameron took a called third strike and Mike Piazza singled to score Beltran, increasing the Mets’ lead to 4-0. Carlos Zambrano then got Marlon Anderson on a pop-up to catcher Michael Barrett for the inning’s third out.
Victor Zambrano retired all three batters in the top of the fourth. Chicago reliever Michael Wuertz hurled a perfect bottom half and Nomar Garciaparra drew a walk to open the top of the fifth. Todd Hollandsworth hit a single and Barrett lined out to third baseman Wright. Jose Macias grounded to back to Victor Zambrano for an inning-ending double play and Beltran singled to begin the bottom half. Floyd got a single to advance Beltran to third base and moved to second via an error by right fielder Hollandsworth. Wright grounded out to Ramirez to bring home Beltran and extend the Mets’ lead to 5-0. Wuertz then struck out Cameron and retired Piazza on a fly ball to left fielder Matt Lawton to end the inning.
Victor Zambrano yielded only a single to Perez in the top of the sixth. Cubs’ reliever Roberto Novoa set down the side in order in the bottom half and Victor pitched a perfect top of the seventh. Cairo singled to begin the bottom of the inning. Beltran followed with a double play ground ball to Perez. Floyd connected for a homer and the Mets’ sixth run of the game. Novoa then threw a called third strike past Wright to close out the inning.
Barrett hit a double to lead off the top of the eighth. Macias doubled to drive home Barrett with the first Chicago run and pinch-hitter Matt Murton flied out to center fielder Beltran. Lawton grounded out to second baseman Cairo to send Macias to third. Victor Zambrano got Perez on a ground ball to first baseman Anderson to finish off the inning. Cubs’ reliever Scott Williamson then yielded only a single to Cameron in the bottom half.
Mets’ reliever Aaron Heilman retired Derrek Lee on a grounder to Wright to start the top of the ninth. Ramirez went down on strikes and Garciaparra singled. Heilman then got Hollandsworth to fly out to Beltran and bring the game to an end. The Mets had a victory and a sweep of the series.
