August 6, 2005: Seo Leads Four-Hit Shutout

The Mets faced the Cubs on a Saturday afternoon at Shea Stadium. The teams played in front of 39,911 fans on hand. Jae Seo and three relievers teamed up for a four-hitter in a 2-0 Mets win over Chicago.
Seo retired the side in order in the top of the first inning. Miguel Cairo singled against Cubs’ starter Greg Maddux with one out in the bottom half. Cairo stole second base and Carlos Beltran drew a walk. Cliff Floyd went down on strikes and David Wright hit a double to score Cairo for a 1-0 Mets lead. Maddux then got Mike Cameron to ground out to shortstop Neifi Perez and finish off the inning.
Seo pitched a perfect top of the second. Maddux set down all three batters in the bottom half. With two outs in the top of the third, Maddux hit a single and stole second base. Matt Lawton grounded out to third baseman Wright to end the inning and Jose Reyes singled to open the bottom half. Reyes went to second after Cairo’s fly out to center fielder Jose Macias and stole third. Beltran hit a single to bring home Reyes with the Mets’ second run of the game. Carlos was caught stealing second on catcher Henry Blanco’s throw to Perez. Maddux then retired Floyd on a fly ball to Macias to close out the inning.
Seo surrendered only a walk to Todd Walker in the top of the fourth. Maddux hurled a perfect bottom half and Macias got a one-out single in the top of the fifth. Blanco singled to advance Macias to third base and went to second on Maddux’s sacrifice bunt. Lawton grounded back to Seo for the inning’s final out. Maddux then retired the side 1-2-3 in the bottom half.
Seo pitched a perfect top of the sixth. Maddux gave up just a walk to Floyd in the bottom of the inning and Jae retired all three Chicago hitters in the top of the seventh. Cameron reached on an error by third baseman Aramis Ramirez to lead off the bottom half. Mike stole second base and Marlon Anderson was struck out. Ramon Castro grounded out to Perez to send Cameron to third. Seo then grounded out to Maddux to end the inning.
Blanco doubled against Seo to begin the top of the eighth. Pinch-hitter Todd Hollandsworth was retired on a line drive to shortstop Reyes. Lawton drew a walk against Mets’ reliever Dae-Sung Koo, who followed up by retiring Walker on a fly ball to right fielder Cameron. New York’s Roberto Hernandez fanned Derrek Lee for the third out of the inning. The Cubs’ Will Ohman then hurled a perfect bottom half.
Mets’ reliever Braden Looper retired Ramirez on a grounder to second baseman Cairo to start the top of the ninth. Jeromy Burnitz flied out to center fielder Beltran. Looper then got Perez to ground out to first baseman Anderson and bring the game to an end. The Mets had a shutout victory.
