The Mets built up a five-run lead against Cubs' starter Jason Marquis. In the second inning, Glavine himself drove home the first run of the game with a single that scored Lastings Milledge. In the fifth, Carlos Delgado and Shawn Green got run-scoring doubles. Jose Reyes singled home Milledge and later scored on Delgado's ground out in the sixth. The Cubs then scored on back-to-back doubles by Derrek Lee and Aramis Ramirez in the bottom of the sixth.

Angel Pagan got a one-out double in the seventh for Chicago. Guillermo Mota relieved Glavine and gave up a single to Jason Kendall. Later in the inning, Pagan scored on a ground out and Mike Fontenot doubled to score Kendall against reliever Pedro Feliciano.

Facing Chicago reliever Will Ohman in the eighth, Delgado got his second double of the game to score Luis Castillo. The Mets scored again in the inning when Paul Lo Duca singled off Michael Wuertz to bring home David Wright. In the ninth, Reyes tripled and scored on Delgado's sacrifice fly.

Billy Wagner pitched a scoreless bottom of the ninth to end the game. Glavine had his 10th win of the season and No. 300 in his career. Tom became the 23rd major league pitcher ever to reach the 300-win mark.
