Koosman gave up only a single to Bombo Rivera in the top of the first inning. Pepe Mangual drew a walk against Expos’ starter Don Carrithers to lead off the bottom half. Felix Millan singled and Mike Vail went down on strikes. Ed Kranepool hit a force play ground ball to second baseman Pete Mackanin and a single by Joe Torre off Carrithers’ ankle brought home Mangual. Jerry Grote followed with a triple that plated Kranepool and Torre for a 3-0 Mets lead. Carrithers then retired Roy Staiger on a fly ball to right fielder Gary Carter for the third out.

Koosman yielded just a double to Earl Williams in the top of the second. Montreal reliever Chip Lang gave up just a double to Mangual in the bottom of the inning and Pepe Frias doubled to begin the top of the third. Lang and Ellis Valentine were struck out and Rivera grounded out to third baseman Staiger to end the inning. Kranepool got a bunt single with one out in the bottom half. Torre singled and Grote popped out to third baseman Larry Parrish. Lang then got Staiger to hit a force play ground ball to Parrish that closed out the inning.

Williams singled for the Expos’ fourth hit with two outs in the top of the fourth. Carter hit a force play grounder to shortstop Bud Harrelson for the inning’s final out and Koosman drew a one-out walk in the bottom half. Mangual grounded out to shortstop Frias and a strikeout of Harrelson ended the inning. Koosman hurled a perfect top of the fifth and Torre singled with two outs in the bottom half. With Grote at bat, Torre got caught by Lang’s pickoff throw and was tagged out by Mackanin to finish off the inning.

Koosman retired the side in order in the top of the sixth. Lang pitched a perfect bottom half and Jerry set down all three batters once again in the top of the seventh. Koosman hit a single against Lang to open the bottom of the inning. Mangual’s sacrifice bunt moved Jerry to second base and Harrelson flied out to left fielder Rivera. Koosman advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored the Mets’ fourth run on a double by Vail. Montreal reliever Chuck Taylor then got Bruce Boisclair to fly out to Carter and end the inning.

Koosman retired the side in order in the top of the eighth. Expos’ reliever Dale Murray hurled a perfect bottom half and Valentine grounded out to Harrelson to begin the top of the ninth. Rivera was also retired on a grounder to Harrelson. Koosman then got Parrish to fly out to center fielder Mangual and bring the game to an end. The Mets had a shutout victory on Jerry’s four-hitter.
