Date: August 4, 1966
Mets starter: Dennis Ribant
Winning pitcher: Jack Hamilton
Key player(s): John Stephenson, Ron Swoboda
Key play: Swoboda's home run
The Mets and Giants squared off on a Thursday afternoon at Shea Stadium. Dennis Ribant took the mound against San Francisco's Juan Marichal. The game featured six home runs, the last of which was hit by Ron Swoboda to give the Mets an 8-6 win.
The scoring started with Giant runs in the three middle innings. Willie McCovey and Jim Ray Hart homered off Ribant in the fourth and sixth innings, respectively, and Marichal scored on Jim Davenport's fifth inning single. The score became 5-0 when San Francisco scored twice more in the seventh.
Cleon Jones' single in the bottom of the seventh brought home Al Luplow with the Mets' first run. In the eighth, Tom Haller hit a home run off Mets' reliever Dallas Green to make it a 6-1 Giants lead.
The Mets began a comeback with three runs off Marichal in the bottom of the eighth. John Stephenson, pinch-hitting for Green, hit a two-run homer and Larry Elliot got a two-out single to score Chuck Hiller. After Jack Hamilton retired the Giants in order, Ken Boyer led off the bottom of the ninth with a home run to make the score 6-5 and remove Marichal from the game.
Lindy McDaniel came on to pitch for San Francisco. Ed Bressoud and Stephenson then got singles to put the tying and winning runs on base. With Hiller due up next, McDaniel was lifted for left-handed reliever Bill Henry.
Playing the percentages, Mets' manager Wes Westrum sent up Swoboda to bat for the lefty hitting Hiller. Ron hit Henry's first pitch over the left field wall for a three-run homer. It was the Mets' second pinch-hit home run of the game and one that gave them an exciting come-from-behind victory.
- This was Swoboda's second game-winning home run of the season off Henry. His first one came in the tenth inning at San Francisco on July 20.
