The Mets faced the Giants on a Wednesday afternoon in San Francisco. The teams played the second of three games in a series at Candlestick Park. Hideo Nomo pitched a complete game three-hitter in a 4-1 Mets win.

Lenny Harris led off the top of the first inning with a home run. Edgardo Alfonzo singled and went to second base on John Olerud’s ground out to first baseman Joe Carter. Mike Piazza drew a walk and a single by Brian McRae drove home Alfonzo with the Mets’ second run. McRae was caught stealing and Giants’ starter Orel Hershiser struck out Tony Phillips to end the inning. Nomo then retired all three San Francisco batters in the bottom half.

Hershiser and Nomo each pitched scoreless ball from the second inning to the fourth. The Mets were limited to singles by Nomo and Piazza in being shut down. Hideo recorded five strikeouts (for a game total of seven) in three perfect innings. The Mets had runners on first and third with two outs in the top of the fifth. Hershiser threw a wild pitch that scored Alfonzo and moved Olerud to second. Piazza walked and McRae singled to plate Olerud for a 4-0 Mets lead. Tony Phillips then flied out to left fielder Barry Bonds to end the inning.

Jeff Kent singled to open the bottom of the fifth. Ellis Burks drew a walk and a wild pitch by Nomo advanced Kent to third base. Burks stole second and Carter hit a sacrifice fly to bring home Kent. Bill Mueller grounded out to second baseman Luis Lopez and a ground ball by Brian Johnson to first baseman Olerud closed out the inning. Hershiser set down the Mets 1-2-3 in the top of the sixth. Nomo then retired the Giants in order in the bottom half.

San Francisco reliever John Johnstone hurled a scoreless top of the seventh inning. Nomo struck out Bonds to begin the bottom half. Kent drew a walk and went to third on Burks’ single to left field. Carter flied out to left fielder Phillips. Nomo then recorded a strikeout of Mueller on which catcher Piazza threw to Olerud to finish off the inning.

McRae singled and Phillips walked to start the top of the eighth. Johnstone threw a called third strike past Lopez and got Rey Ordonez to hit a force play grounder to shortstop Rey Sanchez. Nomo popped out to Sanchez to end the inning. Hideo then retired the Giants 1-2-3 in the bottom half.

San Francisco reliever Jose Mesa pitched a perfect top of the ninth. Nomo fanned Shawon Dunston for his tenth strikeout to begin the bottom half. Bonds got the Giants’ third hit with a single to left field. Kent hit a line drive to Lopez, who threw to Olerud to double up Bonds for the game-ending out. The Mets had a victory on Nomo’s complete game.
