The Mets and Diamondbacks faced each other on a Tuesday night. The teams played the second game of four at Bank One Ballpark in Phoenix. The Mets pounded out a total of 17 hits in a 14-1 win over Arizona.
After a scoreless first inning, David Wright singled off Diamondbacks' starter Claudio Vargas to begin the top of the second. An ensuing triple by Victor Diaz scored Wright with the first run of the game. Vargas struck out Mike Jacobs and a single by Ramon Castro brought home Diaz. Victor Zambrano struck out and Jose Reyes hit a triple that plated Castro. Reyes scored the Mets' fourth run on Miguel Cairo's single. Vargas retired Carlos Beltran on a ground ball back to the mound for the third out. Zambrano then shut down Arizona without a hit in the bottom of the inning.
Wright hit a one-out double in the top of the third. After moving to third base on Vargas's wild pitch, David scored on a double by Diaz. Jacobs singled to advance Diaz to third and Victor came home on Castro's force play grounder. Vargas fanned Zambrano for the third out and Chad Tracy doubled with two outs in the bottom half. An ensuing single by Luis Gonzalez scored Tracy for the first D'Backs run. Zambrano then got Tony Clark on a grounder back to the mound to end the inning.
Vargas and Zambrano each pitched a perfect fourth inning. In the top of the fifth, Wright drew a one-out walk and stole second base on the third strike to Diaz. Jacobs followed with a two-run homer to increase the Mets' lead to 8-1. Vargas struck out Castro to end the inning. Zambrano then retired all three Arizona batters in the bottom half.
Zambrano singled off Diamondbacks' reliever Lance Cormier to open the top of the sixth inning. Victor moved to second on Reyes' ground out and Cairo drew a walk. Beltran singled to load the bases and Cliff Floyd hit a single to score Zambrano. Wright followed with a double that brought home Cairo and Beltran for an 11-1 Mets lead. Diaz struck out and Jacobs walked to reload the bases. An ensuing double by Castro drove in three more New York runs. Cormier then struck out Zambrano to end the inning.
After Zambrano shut down the D'Backs in the bottom of the sixth, Arizona's Brandon Medders pitched a perfect top of the seventh. Victor held the D'Backs to a single by Kelly Stinnett in a scoreless bottom half. Medders and Zambrano each pitched scoreless ball on one hit in the eighth inning. Diamondbacks' reliever Brandon Lyon then recorded three outs after a single by Zambrano in the top of the ninth.
Mets' reliever Heath Bell struck out Royce Clayton and Shawn Green to start the bottom of the ninth inning. Bell then got Alex Cintron to ground out to shortstop Chris Woodward and end the game. The Mets had an easy victory with each player in the starting lineup getting at least one hit.
