The Mets and Astros faced each other on a Tuesday night at Shea Stadium. After slugging a pair of homers on his birthday in the previous game to lead the Mets to victory, Jim Beauchamp was the team’s key contributor once again. Jim drove in all the Mets’ runs with three hits (including a homer) in another 4-2 win over Houston.

Roger Metzger singled against Mets’ starter Tom Seaver to lead off the top of the first inning. Cesar Cedeno popped out to shortstop Ted Martinez and a force play ground ball by Jim Wynn ensued. On second baseman Lute Barnes’ errant throw on the play, Wynn advanced to second. Lee May hit a single to drive home Wynn for a 1-0 Astros lead. Seaver got Bob Watson to hit a force play grounder to Barnes that ended the inning. Houston’s Dave Roberts then limited the Mets to a single by Barnes in the bottom half.

Seaver pitched a scoreless top of the second. To begin the bottom of the inning, Tommie Agee drew a walk and Duffy Dyer singled to left field. John Milner grounded out to first baseman May to advance the runners to second and third. Beauchamp followed with an infield single to score Agee and tie the game. Martinez was retired on a foul pop-up to May. Roberts then struck out Seaver to finish off the inning.

After a scoreless third inning, Watson hit a solo home run with one out in the top of the fourth. Seaver fanned the next two Houston batters to close out the inning and Milner was called out on strikes leading off the bottom half. Beauchamp came to bat and clouted a home run (his third in two nights) to retie the game at 2-2. Roberts got Martinez to pop out to second baseman Tommy Helms. Seaver then hit a ground ball to third baseman Doug Rader for the inning’s final out.

Seaver and Roberts each pitched two-hit scoreless ball from the fifth inning to the seventh. Tom shut down the Astros once again in the top of the eighth and Wayne Garrett got an infield single to open the bottom half. Willie Mays’ sacrifice bunt advanced Garrett to second base and Agee went down on strikes. Dyer was given an intentional walk and Milner drew a walk to load the bases. Beauchamp followed with a single to left field that plated Garrett and Dyer for a two-run Mets lead. Roberts was then replaced on the mound by Houston reliever Jim York, who retired Martinez on a pop-up to shortstop Metzger for the third out of the inning.

Rader grounded out to Martinez to begin the top of the ninth. Helms was retired on a fly ball to center fielder Mays. Seaver then got pinch-hitter Jimmy Stewart to pop out to third baseman Garrett and end the game. The Mets had their second straight victory over the Astros on a productive display of hitting by Beauchamp.
