Seaver and the Padres’ Dave Roberts each started the game with four scoreless innings pitched. Tom gave up three singles while Roberts held to Mets to a walk to Jones and a single by Donn Clendenon. With one out in the top of the fifth, Ed Spiezio hit a home run for a 1-0 San Diego lead. Bob Barton grounded out to shortstop Ted Martinez and a single by Roberts followed. Enzo Hernandez singled for the Padres’ sixth hit and Seaver struck out Don Mason to end the inning. Roberts then set down the Mets in order in the bottom half.

Seaver pitched a perfect top of the sixth. Roberts retired the side in order in the bottom of the inning and Tom set down all three San Diego hitters in the top of the seventh. Jones tripled to lead off the bottom half. Clendenon went down on strikes and Tommie Agee followed with a sacrifice fly to drive home Jones with the tying run. Bob Aspromonte was struck out to finish off the inning and Hernandez drew a one-out walk in the top of the eighth. Mason’s sacrifice bunt advanced Hernandez to second base and Cito Gaston was retired on an inning-ending fly ball to center fielder Agee. Roberts then set down the side 1-2-3 in the bottom half.

Larry Stahl drew a walk with one out in the top of the ninth. Stahl stole second base and Ollie Brown lined out to left fielder Jones. Seaver retired Spiezio on a fly ball to right fielder Ken Singleton to close out the inning and Martinez grounded back to Roberts to begin the bottom half. Ken Boswell flied out to center fielder Gaston and up to bat came Jones. Cleon slugged a home run that brought the game to an end. The Mets had a victory over the Padres.
