The Mets faced the Rockies on a Sunday afternoon at Shea Stadium. The teams played the finale of a three-game series. The Mets completed a series sweep with a 2-0 win over Colorado.
Mets’ starter Orlando Hernandez gave up just a single to Todd Helton in the top of the first inning. The Rockies’ Jason Jennings pitched a perfect bottom half and Hernandez yielded only a single to Brad Hawpe in the top of the second. Leading off the bottom of the inning, Carlos Delgado homered for a 1-0 Mets lead. David Wright grounded out to shortstop Clint Barmes and a strikeout of Michael Tucker ensued. Jennings then got Chris Woodward to fly out to right fielder Hawpe and end the inning.
After setting down the side in order in the top of the third, Hernandez got a one-out single in the bottom half. Jose Reyes went down on strikes and Lastings Milledge singled to advance Hernandez to third base. On his own hit, Milledge moved to second via a throw. Carlos Beltran flied out to Hawpe to finish off the inning and Orlando retired all three batters in the top of the fourth. Jennings surrendered just a walk to Tucker in the bottom half and Hawpe singled to open the top of the fifth. Yorvit Torrealba hit a double and Hernandez fanned the next three batters to close out the inning. With one out in the bottom half, Orlando reached second on an error by catcher Torrealba. Reyes was called out on strikes and Hernandez stole third. Jennings then got Milledge on a pop-up to third baseman Garrett Atkins for the inning’s final out.
Hernandez shut down the Mountain Men in the top of the sixth. Beltran slugged a homer for the Mets’ second run to begin the bottom half. Delgado and Wright were retired on ground balls to Atkins and a walk to Tucker followed. Michael stole second base and Jennings struck out Woodward to end the inning. Mets’ reliever Chad Bradford hurled a scoreless top of the seventh and Colorado’s Jose Mesa pitched a perfect bottom half. New York’s Aaron Heilman retired the side 1-2-3 in the top of the eighth. For the Rockies, reliever Brian Fuentes fanned all three batters in the bottom of the inning.
Mets’ reliever Billy Wagner retired Helton on a grounder to shortstop Reyes to begin the top of the ninth. Matt Holliday went down on strikes. Wagner then got Atkins to ground out to Reyes and bring the game to an end. The Mets had a shutout victory and a sweep of the series.
