The Mets faced the Astros on a Wednesday night in Houston. The teams played the third of four games in a series. In 14 innings, the Mets came away with a 3-2 win.

R.A. Dickey and the Astros’ Brett Myers each pitched scoreless ball from the first inning to the sixth. Ruben Tejada hit a double with one out in the top of the seventh. Dickey doubled to score Tejada and moved to third base on Jose Reyes’ single to center field. Angel Pagan followed with a force play ground ball to second baseman Geoff Blum to drive home Dickey for a 2-0 Mets lead. Myers retired David Wright on a grounder to third baseman Chris Johnson to close out the inning. Dickey then set down the side in order in the bottom half.

Houston reliever Mark Melancon hurled a perfect top of the eighth. Humberto Quintero singled to open the bottom of the inning. Pinch-hitter Jason Michaels hit a single and Michael Bourn’s sacrifice bunt advanced the runners to second and third base. Angel Sanchez singled to bring home pinch-runner Jason Castro and reduce the Mets’ lead to 2-1. Dickey then struck out Hunter Pence and got Carlos Lee on a grounder to third baseman Wright that ended the inning.

Astros’ reliever Tim Byrdak retired the side 1-2-3 in the top of the ninth. With one out in the bottom half, Blum homered against Dickey to tie the game. Mets’ reliever Hisanori Takahashi fanned Brett Wallace and got Castro on a ground ball to second baseman Tejada that finished off the inning and sent the game onward. Reyes and Pagan got back-to-back singles off Houston’s Brandon Lyon to begin the top of the 10th. Wright flied out to left fielder Lee and a double steal put Reyes at third base and Pagan at second. Carlos Beltran was given an intentional walk that loaded the bases. Ike Davis hit a grounder on which first baseman first baseman Wallace threw to catcher Castro for an out at home on Reyes. Lyon retired Jeff Francoeur on an inning-ending line drive to right fielder Pence. Takahashi then pitched a perfect bottom half.

The Astros’ Wilton Lopez and the Mets’ Bobby Parnell each pitched scoreless 11th and 12th innings. Davis singled against Houston reliever Jeff Fulchino to lead off the top of the 13th. Francoeur popped out to shortstop Sanchez and a line drive by Josh Thole was caught by center fielder Bourn. Luis Castillo drew a walk and Fulchino threw a called third strike past pinch-hitter Henry Blanco to end the inning. Mets’ reliever Elmer Dessens then hurled a scoreless bottom half.

Reyes drew a walk against Astros’ reliever Gustavo Chacin to begin the top of the 14th. Jose moved to second base on Pagan’s sacrifice bunt and stole third. Mike Hessman drew a walk and Beltran was walked intentionally to load the bases. Davis followed with a sacrifice fly that plated Reyes and put the Mets ahead by a run. Francoeur was given an intentional walk that loaded the bases once again. Chacin then struck out Thole to finish off the inning.

Mets’ reliever Manny Acosta retired Lee on a ground ball to third baseman Hessman to start the bottom of the 14th. Johnson was retired on a grounder to shortstop Reyes. Acosta then got Blum to ground out to Reyes and bring the game to an end. The Mets had a victory in extra innings.
