Steve Trachsel and the Rockies’ Byung-Hyun Kim each started the game with two scoreless innings pitched. Trachsel retired the side in order in the top of the third and Carlos Beltran got a two-out single in the bottom half. Carlos Delgado singled and Wright hit a double to bring home Beltran for a 1-0 Mets lead. Kim then got Michael Tucker to ground out to second baseman Jamey Carroll and end the inning.

Matt Holliday singled with one out in the top of the fourth. Garrett Atkins slugged a two-run homer and Brad Hawpe went down on strikes. Yorvit Torrealba hit a double and Clint Barmes was given an intentional walk. Kim singled to drive home Torrealba for a 3-1 Rockies lead. On the play, Barmes was out via a relay throw by first baseman Delgado to third baseman Wright to finish off the inning. To begin the bottom half, Chris Woodward was hit by a pitch. Chavez followed with a home run to tie the game at 3-3. Trachsel was struck out and Jose Reyes grounded out to first baseman Todd Helton. Kim then retired Paul Lo Duca on a ground ball to shortstop Barmes to close out the inning.

Trachsel yielded only a single to Cory Sullivan in the top of the fifth. Beltran and Delgado drew back-to-back walks against Kim to open the bottom half. Wright doubled to score Beltran and put the Mets ahead, 4-3. Tucker hit a double to plate Delgado and advance Wright to third base. Woodward followed with a sacrifice fly that brought home Wright with the Mets’ sixth run of the game. With Colorado reliever Tom Martin on the mound, Chavez hit a grounder on which Helton threw to catcher Torrealba for an out at home on Tucker. Martin then threw a called third strike past Trachsel for the inning’s third out.

Trachsel shut down the Mountain Men in the top of the sixth. Martin pitched a scoreless bottom half and Steve retired all three batters in the top of the seventh. Woodward singled against Rockies’ reliever Jose Mesa with one out in the bottom of the inning. Chavez hit a force play ground ball to Carroll and a fly ball by pinch-hitter Ricky Ledee was caught by left fielder Holliday to end the inning. Mets’ reliever Chad Bradford gave up just a single to Atkins in the top of the eighth. Mesa then hurled a scoreless bottom half.

Torrealba singled against Mets’ reliever Billy Wagner to begin the top of the ninth. Barmes and pinch-hitter Ryan Spilborghs both went down on strikes. With Carroll at bat, Torrealba advanced to second base on defensive indifference. Wagner then got Carroll to fly out to right fielder Chavez and bring the game to an end. The Mets had a victory to start the weekend series.
