The Mets faced the Pirates on a Sunday afternoon at Pittsburgh's PNC Park. Johan Santana took the mound for the Mets in the third of a four-game overlapping weekend series. Santana pitched a complete game three-hitter and the Mets blanked the Bucs, 4-0.
Following a scoreless first inning, the Mets came to bat against Pirates' starter Jeff Karstens in the top of the second. Daniel Murphy led off with a walk and Fernando Tatis was called out on strikes. Brian Schneider followed with a home run to give the Mets a 2-0 lead. In the bottom of the inning, Santana retired the side in order and did so again in the third.
The Mets got a run in the top of the fourth when Carlos Beltran scored on a single by Schneider. The Pirates had two runners on base in the bottom half, but failed to score against Santana. Jose Reyes and Argenis Reyes led off the fifth with singles, but Karstens got Damion Easley to hit into a double play and shut down the Mets. Johan then pitched a perfect bottom of the inning.
In the sixth, Beltran homered off Karstens for the Mets' fourth run of the game. Santana pitched a scoreless bottom half and shut down Pittsburgh again in the seventh. The Mets loaded the bases with two out in the top of the eighth, but Santana was fanned by Pirates' reliever Sean Burnett to end the inning. Back on the mound, Johan recorded two strikeouts of his own in retiring the Bucs in order.
Pittsburgh's Craig Hansen held the Mets scoreless in the top of the ninth inning. Santana began the bottom half with two fly ball outs to left fielder Endy Chavez. Johan then retired Adam LaRoche on a ground ball to second baseman Argenis Reyes to end the game. The Mets had a victory on Santana's 11th win of the season and first shutout as a Met.
