Cards’ starter Tom Underwood pitched a scoreless top of the first inning. In the bottom half, Hector Cruz singled with two outs and advanced to third base on an ensuing single by Ted Simmons. Keith Hernandez walked to load the bases and Ken Reitz got an infield single to score Cruz. Zachry retired Don Kessinger on a fly ball to center fielder Lee Mazzilli for the third out. Underwood and Zachry then followed up with three consecutive scoreless innings.

Underwood walked Mazzilli to open the top of the fifth. Mazzilli stole second and went to third on a single by Doug Flynn. Zachry hit into a double play on which Mazzilli came home to tie the game. Lenny Randle struck out to end the inning. The Cards were then shut down by Zachry in the bottom half.

Bud Harrelson singled and moved to second on shortstop Kessinger’s error to begin the top of the sixth inning. A single by Steve Henderson sent Harrelson to third. John Milner hit a single to score Harrelson and put the Mets ahead, 2-1. John Stearns flied out to left fielder Lou Brock and a single by Joel Youngblood loaded the bases. Underwood threw a called third strike past Mazzilli. Flynn singled to bring home Henderson with the Mets’ third run. Zachry was struck out by St. Louis reliever Butch Metzger to end the inning. Pat then hurled a scoreless bottom half.

Henderson doubled with two outs in the top of the seventh inning. Milner drew a walk and Stearns hit a double to drive home Henderson. Metzger retired Youngblood on an inning-ending ground ball to third baseman Reitz. Zachry pitched a perfect bottom half and the Mets put runners on first and third with two outs against the Cards’ Al Hrabosky in the top of the eighth. On a double steal, Randle took second and Flynn scored the Mets’ fifth run of the game. Harrelson then popped out to second baseman Mike Tyson to end the inning.

Zachry set down the Cardinals 1-2-3 in the bottom of the eighth. Hrabosky pitched a perfect top of the ninth and Hernandez led off the bottom of the inning with a single to right field. Reitz and Kessinger hit consecutive force play grounders and pinch-hitter Dave Rader drew a walk. Zachry then got pinch-hitter Roger Freed on a fly ball to right fielder Youngblood to end the game. The Mets had their second win of the series on Pat’s complete game.
