San Francisco starter Barry Zito retired the next three batters and Parnell pitched a scoreless top of the second. Parnell struck out Zito and got Eugenio Velez to hit a force play ground ball to shortstop Anderson Hernandez. Freddy Sanchez flied out to right fielder Jeff Francoeur to end the inning. The Mets then failed to score in the bottom half.
Parnell set down all three Giants batters in the top of the fourth. Luis Castillo singled to lead off the bottom of the inning. Zito retired the next two hitters on outfield fly balls. Francoeur followed with a double to drive home Castillo and extend the Mets’ lead to 2-0. Fernando Tatis went down on strikes to end the inning and Parnell hurled a perfect top of the fifth. Zito shut down the Mets after a leadoff single by Omir Santos in the bottom half. Parnell then held San Francisco to a two-out single by Sanchez in a scoreless top of the sixth.
Castillo drew a walk to open the bottom of the sixth inning. David Wright doubled to send Castillo to third base. Against Giants’ reliever Justin Miller, Gary Sheffield hit a sacrifice fly to score Castillo with the third New York run. Miller retired Francoeur and Tatis on consecutive grounders to shortstop Renteria to end the inning. For the Mets, reliever Brian Stokes set down San Francisco 1-2-3 in the top of the seventh. Miller then pitched a perfect bottom half.
Stokes fanned Aaron Rowand to start the top of the eighth inning. Renteria singled and pinch-hitter Fred Lewis drew a walk. Mets’ reliever Pedro Feliciano got Velez for a force play ground ball to first baseman Daniel Murphy. Feliciano followed up by getting Sanchez to ground out to third baseman Wright and end the inning. Giants’ reliever Merkin Valdez then set down the Mets in order on three fly balls to center fielder Rowand in the bottom half.
