In the first inning, Alex Trevino singled with one out against Braves' starter Tony Brizzolara. Lee Mazzilli followed with a home run to put the Mets on top, 2-0. The Mets then scored five times in the second on Trevino's three-run double, an error by Atlanta first baseman Dale Murphy on which Alex came home and Ed Kranepool's double off reliever Preston Hanna to score Mazzilli. The Braves got solo homers from Bob Horner and Barry Bonnell off Mets' starter Dock Ellis to make the score 7-2 in the bottom of the second.
Frank Taveras got a two-out double off Hanna with one out in the top of the third inning. A single by Trevino and a walk to Mazzilli loaded the bases. Richie Hebner then singled to score Taveras and Trevino with Mazzilli also coming home on an error by right fielder Gary Matthews. In the bottom half, Horner clouted a three-run homer off Ellis to cut the Met lead to 10-5.
A single by Doug Flynn off Atlanta reliever Adrian Devine scored Jose Cardenal in the fourth for the Mets. Later in the inning, Taveras's ground out brought home Joel Youngblood with another run. After Andy Hassler struck out the side in order in the bottom half, the Mets scored in the top of the fifth on Cardenal's single that brought home Mazzilli for a 13-5 lead.
Hassler shut down the Braves in the bottom of the fifth and sixth. In the seventh, Andy was relieved by Dale Murray after Atlanta had loaded the bases. Murray got Bonnell to hit into a force play to end the inning.
In the eighth, the Mets got two-run singles from Taveras and John Stearns off the Braves' Bo McLaughlin. Kranepool also got a single to score Mazzilli with the Mets' 18th run of the game. Atlanta reliever Larry Bradford then retired the Mets in order in the top of the ninth inning.
Murray pitched a scoreless bottom of the ninth to finish off the game. The Mets had a productive win with a 17-hit attack.
