The Mets faced the Giants on a Sunday afternoon at Shea Stadium. The teams played the finale of a three-game series. Al Leiter recorded twelve strikeouts in eight innings of two-hit shutout ball and the Mets defeated San Francisco, 2-0.
Ramon Martinez got a one-out single against Leiter in the top of the first. Martinez stole second base and Barry Bonds was called out on strikes. Jeff Kent lined out to third baseman Robin Ventura to end the inning and the Giants' Livan Hernandez pitched a scoreless bottom half. Leiter fanned both Russ Davis and Rich Aurilia in a perfect top of the second and consecutive singles by Benny Agbayani and Lenny Harris opened the bottom half. Mike Bordick hit a ground ball on which shortstop Aurilia threw to third baseman Davis for an out on Agbayani. Leiter followed with a sacrifice bunt to advance Harris to third and Bordick to second. Hernandez then retired Darryl Hamilton on a foul fly ball to left fielder Bonds for the inning's third out.
Leiter chalked up strikeouts of Bobby Estalella and Calvin Murray in a perfect top of the third. Mike Piazza singled with two outs in the bottom half. Ventura drew a walk and Agbayani flied out to right fielder Ellis Burks to finish off the inning. Leiter set down the side in order in the top of the fourth. Hernandez did the same in the bottom half and Al fanned Burks and Aurilia in retiring the Giants 1-2-3 again in the top of the fifth. The Mets were then put down in order by Hernandez in the bottom of the inning.
Leiter struck out Estalella to begin a perfect top of the sixth. Hernandez retired all three batters in the bottom half and Martinez grounded out to shortstop Bordick to lead off the top of the seventh. Bonds was struck out and Kent singled for the Giants' second hit of the game. Burks grounded out to Ventura to finish off the inning and Harris doubled to open the bottom half. Lenny advanced to third base on Bordick's ground out to second baseman Martinez and a strikeout of Leiter ensued. Hamilton drew a walk and Hernandez got Derek Bell on a fly ball to Burks to close out the inning.
Leiter struck out the side in a scoreless top of the eighth. Edgardo Alfonzo drew a walk against Hernandez to lead off the bottom half. Piazza flied out to Burks and a double by Ventura scored Alfonzo for a 1-0 Mets lead. Jay Payton grounded out to Aurilia and an intentional walk to Harris followed. Bordick singled to bring home Ventura with the second New York run. With San Francisco reliever Doug Henry on the mound facing pinch-hitter Todd Zeile, Bordick stole second base. Henry then retired Zeile on a ground ball to Aurilia for the final out of the inning.
Mets' reliever John Franco got Murray on a pop-up to second baseman Alfonzo to start the top of the ninth. Martinez reached on Ventura's error and went to second base on defensive indifference. Bonds grounded out to Alfonzo to send Martinez to third. Franco then threw a called third strike past Kent to end the game. The Mets had a shutout victory with impressive pitching.
