The Mets faced the Expos on a Tuesday night at Shea Stadium. Terry Leach, with his 9-0 record, looked for his tenth consecutive winning decision. Leach pitched eight innings, allowing two runs on six hits in getting No. 10 as the Mets defeated Montreal, 6-2.
Leach was staked to a four-run lead in the first two innings. Keith Hernandez got a two-run double off Floyd Youmans in the first before an out was made. The Mets had the bases loaded in the second when Youmans hit Len Dykstra with a pitch to force in a run and Montreal reliever Andy McGaffigan hit Hernandez to force in another. Meanwhile, Terry kept the Expos scoreless on two hits.
Tim Raines homered off Leach in the fifth for Montreal’s first run of the game. Darryl Strawberry connected for a homer off McGaffigan to start the bottom half of the inning. Kevin McReynolds added a solo home run in the seventh off Randy St. Claire to make the score 6-1 in favor of the Mets.
