Pelfrey set down the side in order in the top of the first. Rockies' starter Ubaldo Jimenez surrendered just a walk to Fernando Martinez in the bottom half and Brad Hawpe drew a one-out walk in the top of the second. Ian Stewart singled and Miguel Olivo followed with a force play ground ball to third baseman David Wright. Pelfrey got Clint Barmes to hit a force play grounder to shortstop Jose Reyes to end the inning. Jimenez then hurled a perfect bottom half.
Pelfrey yielded just a single to Dexter Fowler in the top of the third. Jimenez retired all three batters in the bottom of the inning and Pelfrey set down the Mountain Men in order in the top of the fourth. Martinez singled to lead off the bottom half. Angel Pagan went down on strikes and Wright flied out to right fielder Hawpe. Jimenez then fanned Ike Davis for the inning's third out.
Pelfrey held the Rockies to a single by Olivo in the top of the fifth. Jimenez gave up only a single to Chris Carter in the bottom half and Carlos Gonzalez doubled with one out in the top of the sixth. Pelfrey retired both Troy Tulowitzki and Hawpe on infield grounders to close out the inning and got a leadoff single in the bottom half. Reyes followed with a force play ground ball to third baseman Stewart. Martinez was hit by a pitch and Pagan's ground out to second baseman Barmes advanced the runners to second and third. Wright was given an intentional walk that loaded the bases. Jimenez then struck out Davis to end the inning.
Pelfrey set down the side 1-2-3 in the top of the seventh. Carter drew a walk to open the bottom half. Josh Thole hit a double to send pinch-runner Jeff Francoeur to third base and Ruben Tejada was called out on strikes. Pinch-hitter Carlos Beltran was walked intentionally to load the bases and Reyes hit a sacrifice fly to drive home Francoeur for a one-run Mets lead. Jimenez then fanned Martinez to close out the inning.
Mets' reliever Hisanori Takahashi pitched a perfect top of the eighth. Colorado's Joe Beimel and Rafael Betancourt combined for a scoreless bottom half and New York's Francisco Rodriguez retired Gonzalez on a ground ball to first baseman Davis to begin the top of the ninth. Tulowitzki went down on strikes. Rodriguez then got Hawpe to ground out to second baseman Tejada and bring the game to an end. The Mets had a shutout victory.
