Padres’ starter Chris Young then got Michael Tucker on a fly ball to center fielder Ben Johnson for the inning’s final out.

Hernandez pitched a perfect top of the second. To begin the bottom of the inning, Ledee hit a single and Mike DiFelice drew a walk. Hernandez followed with a bunt on which first baseman Gonzalez threw to third baseman Walker for an out on Ledee. Reyes tripled to drive home DiFelice and Hernandez with the tying runs. Chavez followed with a sacrifice fly to plate Reyes and put the Mets ahead, 3-2. Young then got Wright on a fly ball to right fielder Giles to close out the inning.

Hernandez and Young each pitched scoreless ball from the third inning to the fifth. Orlando set down the side in order in the top of the sixth and San Diego reliever Jon Adkins hurled a perfect bottom half. Giles hit a leadoff double in the top of the seventh inning. Gonzalez grounded out to first baseman Delgado and a double by Bard brought home Giles to tie the game. Geoff Blum was retired on a fly ball to left fielder Tucker. Hernandez then got Josh Barfield to ground out to Valentin and end the inning.

Reyes singled against Padres’ reliever Doug Brocail to begin the bottom of the seventh. Chavez followed with a bunt single and Wright hit a double to score Reyes. Delgado was walked intentionally to load the bases and Valentin singled to drive home Chavez and Wright for a 6-3 Mets lead. Tucker doubled against San Diego’s Alan Embree to plate Delgado with the seventh New York run of the game. Ledee went down on strikes and DiFelice walked to load the bases once again. Padres’ reliever Scott Williamson then got pinch-hitter Julio Franco to hit a grounder to shortstop Blum for an inning-ending double play.

Mets’ reliever Aaron Heilman pitched a scoreless top of the eighth inning. San Diego’s Mike Thompson yielded only a double to Wright in the bottom half. New York’s Pedro Feliciano threw a called third strike past Giles to open the top of the ninth. Gonzalez was struck out and Bard singled to right field. Feliciano then retired Blum on a fly ball to Tucker to end the game. The Mets had a sweep of the three-game series.
