The Mets faced the Astros on a Wednesday night in Houston. The teams played the middle part of a three-game series. The Mets broke out with six runs in the 10th inning for an 8-2 win.

Bruce Chen and the Astros' Tim Redding each pitched three innings of scoreless ball to start the game. In the top of the fourth, Robin Ventura drew a one-out walk and Mike Piazza hit into a force play. Todd Zeile followed with a single to center field. An ensuing single by Benny Agbayani drove home Piazza from second base. On an error by center fielder Richard Hidalgo, Zeile came around to score and Agbayani reached third base. Redding got Jay Payton to pop out to shortstop Julio Lugo for the third out. Chen then pitched a scoreless bottom of the inning.

Neither team scored in the fifth and sixth innings. Houston reliever Ron Villone retired the Mets in order in the top of the seventh. The Astros loaded the bases with none out against Chen in the bottom half. A sacrifice fly by Moises Alou off reliever Grant Roberts scored Lugo and moved Jeff Bagwell to third. Hidalgo reached on a fielder's choice ground ball that plated Bagwell to tie the game. Roberts set down the next two batters to end the inning. Astros' reliever Mike Williams pitched a perfect top of the eighth. John Franco then shut down the Astros in the bottom half.

Houston's Billy Wagner and the Mets' Rick White each pitched a scoreless ninth inning. With one out in the top of the 10th, Lenny Harris and Tsuyoshi Shinjo got back-to-back singles off Astros' reliever Michael Jackson. A single by Matt Lawton scored Harris to give the Mets a 3-2 lead. Edgardo Alfonzo followed with a homer for three more Met runs. Ventura and Piazza each singled and Jackson was replaced on the mound by Octavio Dotel. Zeile hit a double to bring home Ventura and Piazza for a six-run Mets lead. Dotel then struck out pinch-hitter Mark Johnson and Jay Payton to end the inning.

In the bottom of the 10th, the Astros had runners on first and second with one out against Mets' reliever Donne Wall. Lugo hit a force play grounder to second baseman Alfonzo. Wall then threw a called third strike past Bagwell to end the game. The Mets had a victory with an extra-inning explosion.
