The Mets and Cubs concluded a series at Wrigley Field on a Sunday afternoon. The game lasted 4 hours and 25 minutes and went into 13 innings. The Mets came out with a 5-4 win on a run-scoring single by relief pitcher Pat Mahomes.

Al Leiter and Chicago starter Kyle Farnsworth each pitched shutout ball over the first four innings. In the top of the fifth, Darryl Hamilton and Roger Cedeno reached against Farnsworth, but both were thrown out on the bases. The Cubs then got two runs off Leiter when Manny Alexander singled home Mickey Morandini and later scored on a single by Mark Grace in the bottom of the fifth.

In the top of the sixth, Rey Ordonez singled off Cubs' reliever Rod Beck to start the inning. Following Leiter's sacrifice bunt, Beck walked Rickey Henderson and Edgardo Alfonzo to load the bases for the Mets. John Olerud followed with a double off Felix Heredia to score Ordonez and Henderson, tying the game. Alfonzo later came home on a single by Hamilton to give the Mets a 3-2 lead.

Leiter shut down the Cubs in the bottom of the sixth inning. In the seventh, Al recorded two strikeouts to bring his total for the game to 15. Turk Wendell then pitched a perfect eighth inning for the Mets.

In the ninth, the Cubs' Henry Rodriguez homered off Armando Benitez to tie the game, 3-3. The Mets took the lead in the top of the tenth on Alfonzo's sacrifice fly off Terry Adams that scored Henderson. In the bottom of the inning, Chicago retied the game when Olerud's error of Rodriguez's grounder brought home Alexander from third base.

Neither team scored in the 11th inning. In the bottom of the 12th, Mahomes came in to reliever Chuck McElroy and got Sammy Sosa for an inning-ending ground out. Mahomes then hit a single off Chicago's Scott Sanders to bring home Cedeno with the tie-breaking run with two out in the top of the 13th inning.

Mahomes retired the first two Cub batters in the bottom of the 13th. He then gave up a double to Sanders and faced pinch-hitter Jeff Reed. Pat struck out Reed to end the game. It was the 20th strikeout for Mets pitching in the game as Mahomes emerged as the winning pitcher on his own RBI single.
