The Mets faced the Braves on a Tuesday night in Atlanta. The teams played the opener of a three-game series. Bartolo Colon pitched seven scoreless innings and Ruben Tejada had a pair of run-scoring singles to lead the Mets to a 4-0 win.
Eric Young singled against Braves’ starter Aaron Harang to lead off the top of the first. Daniel Murphy went down on strikes and Young stole second base. David Wright grounded out to shortstop Andrelton Simmons and a line drive by Curtis Granderson was caught by first baseman Freddie Freeman to end the inning. Colon gave up just a double to Freeman in the bottom half and Harang hurled a perfect top of the second. Evan Gattis got a two-out single in the bottom of the inning. Colon then retired Simmons on a fly ball to right fielder Granderson for the inning’s final out.
Tejada drew a walk to open the top of the third. Colon was struck out and Young drew a walk. Murphy was retired on a fly ball to right fielder Jason Heyward, after which Tejada advanced to third base. Young stole second and moved to third on a wild pitch that brought home Tejada for a 1-0 Mets lead. Harang retired Wright on an inning-ending fly ball to center fielder B. J. Upton. Colon then shut down the Braves in the bottom half.
Colon and Harang each pitched scoreless ball from the fourth inning to the sixth. Travis d'Arnaud hit a double against Atlanta reliever Gus Schlosser to begin the top of the seventh. Tejada singled to drive home d’Arnaud and advanced to second base on Colon’s sacrifice bunt. Young got a single against the Braves’ Luis Avilan, scoring Tejada to increase the Mets’ lead to 3-0. On his own hit, Eric was out at second via a throw by Heyward to Simmons. Murphy singled and Atlanta’s Anthony Varvaro got Wright to hit a force play ground ball to Simmons that ended the inning. Simmons hit a single with two outs in the bottom half. Pinch-hitter Ryan Doumit reached on an error by shortstop Tejada. Colon then retired Heyward on a grounder to second baseman Murphy to close out the inning.
Lucas Duda and Juan Lagares got back-to-back singles against Braves’ reliever Ian Thomas with one out in the top of the eighth. Atlanta’s Pedro Beato retired d’Arnaud on a pop-up to Simmons. Tejada singled to drive home Duda with the Mets’ fourth run of the game. Pinch-hitter Ike Davis grounded out to Simmons to finish off the inning and Mets’ reliever Kyle Farnsworth set down the side in order in the bottom half. Beato then retired the Mets on three consecutive outfield fly balls in the top of the ninth.
Justin Upton singled against Mets’ reliever Jose Valverde to lead off the bottom of the ninth inning. Dan Uggla got a single and Gattis followed with a ground ball on which Tejada threw to third baseman Wright for an out on Justin Upton. Simmons reached on an error by Valverde to load the bases and pinch-hitter Gerald Laird popped out to Murphy. Valverde then got Heyward to fly out to center fielder Lagares and bring the game to an end. The Mets had a shutout victory.
