1954: Gary Carter is born.

1975: The Mets defeat the Phillies, 2-1, in the season opener at Shea Stadium. Dave Kingman hits a home run and Joe Torre gets a game-winning single in their debuts as Mets.

1978: The Mets defeat the Expos, 6-5, at Shea Stadium on Ed Kranepool's home run in the ninth inning. Mardie Cornejo is the winning pitcher in his major league debut.

1982: The Mets defeat the Phillies, 7-2, on Opening Day at Veterans Stadium.

1984: The Mets conclude a three-game series sweep with a 3-1 win over the Astros at Houston.

1986: The Mets defeat the Pirates, 4-2, in the season opener at Three Rivers Stadium.

1991: The Mets defeat the Phillies, 2-1, on Opening Day at Shea Stadium.

1997: Bobby Jones and Greg McMichael combine for a five-hitter in a 5-3 Mets win over the Dodgers at Los Angeles.

2009: The Mets collect ten hits and defeat the Reds, 9-7, at Cincinnati.

2012: The Mets complete a three-game series sweep with a 7-5 win over the Braves at Citi Field.

2013: Matt Harvey and Josh Edgin combine on a four-hitter in a 7-2 Mets win over the Phillies at Philadelphia.

2014: Bartolo Colon and two relievers team up for a shutout in a 4-0 Mets win over the Braves at Atlanta.
